Warm-up to Pattern Play

Receiving & Turning No Pressure

- These drills can run simultaneously in both directions.

- B shows and receives ACROSS THE BODY in one fluid motion to face upfield, without pausing.
Receiving & Turning With Pressure   3 Variations

1. The Turn - B shows with pressure and shield turns or turns with a trick to move upfield.
2. The Layoff - B shows for an immediate layoff back to A triggering the Up/Back/Thru combination.
3. The Flick - B shows for a flick around the defender to turn upfield.
Creating Space to Receive

- B draws the defender towards A and then spins away to find space.
Up2 With Layoff
- In these patterns, C is not a defender but part of the pattern. Passive or active defense can be added later.

- B show to A but instead the pass goes past B, "up 2" to C who is also showing for the ball.
- B can be taught to "dummy" the pass for added deception.
- Variation: B starts the pattern with an up/back combo with A.
* Run these simple 1 and 2 player patterns in both directions in the larger grid. The players will become familiar with the rotations and movement which will more easily progress into the more complicated "Pattern Play" variations in later drills. This same rotation set-up can be used in a variety of shooting drills to goal, as well.

The above drills are the introductory warm-up
patterns from the Tom Howe coaching clinics, NSCAA and USSF coaching courses.
