Passing Patterns for Improvement in
Combination Play and Movement Off the Ball

"Miss -a-Man" Passing - Warm-up and Drill
Developing the "Double Pass" and "UP/Back & Thru"
-This drill comes from the Charlton Athletic Youth Training program and fits in nicely with the concepts put forward by Coach Howe. Furthermore, it is easily understood by players, even the younger ones and can build to the more complex variations.
Key Points:

1. As Always. Show to the pass - Lots of talk - Anticipate and Move into Space.

2. Terry Westley uses this pattern as a warm-up before games to establish a rhythm with the passing and emphasizing layoffs.

3. Add shadow defenders who simply walk around to get a little in the way. This forces the attacking players to move into passing lanes while showing to the passer.

4. Add some goals and goalkeepers for shooting practice after the last layoff. Later, add side channels with "neutral" players for wall pass options. Then have the coaches or a few players provide defensive pressure while they work the "up/back and thru passes to goal.
